MY THESIS ABSTRACT: Person Deixis in Barrack Obama’s 2008 Democratic Party Presidential Nomination Speech: “A more Perfect Union”.


This study examines person deixis used in Barrack Obama’s 2008 Democratic Party Presidential Nomination speech. This research is formulated in to two main problems, they are the person deixis used in the speech and the purpose/s of its usage seen from political communication goals. This study uses descriptive qualitative research methodology. From the point of view of some theoretical concepts under pragmatics umbrella like the subdivision of person deixis, referents, the role of context in an utterance and political communication, the main domains of reference contributes to some major subdivisions such as the self pointing “I” or the partisan “we”. Person deixis “we” was used both inclusively and exclusively. The person deixis used can reach two purposes of political communication goals; they are preserving friendship and preserving the friendship of allies. The evaluation of the results is followed by a concluding discussion of the person deixis usage and its role on political communication goals. At the end, this study suggests a further research on the dominant person deixis deployed and their shifting in a political speech.
